You can have nose surgery both for an aesthetic or functional reason. Both men and women, who are disturbed by the way their nose looks, whose nose has deformed, changed during the aging process or in some cases those, who have breathing problems, have it operated. Nose surgery is the most common procedure in the face area.
Nose surgery can make a do of things.
Cosmetic nose surgery can make a person look considerably better, however, as a substantial bonus, it boosts a person's self-confidence and satisfaction with his or her looks.
According to the patient's wishes and/or the surgeon's preferences, the operation will be carried out under local or general anesthesia. There are two ways to perform the surgery:
The surgeon has better access to the cartilage and nasal bone with the open technique and it enables to do more complicated procedures. Nevertheless, the closed technique affects the tissues considerably less and the wound will heal faster; absorbable sutures will be used with this technique. Skin and soft tissue will be removed from the nose structure beneath them after the incision with both techniques. After that the cartilage and bone will be reshaped according to the patient's wishes (and of course within the limits of normality).
Reshaping the nose is individual and depends on the exact problem. For example, when you need to make your nose smaller, the nasal bone is carefully fractured in order to remove the excessive bone; in case of breathing problems, the clogs will be removed, etc. Therefore, bone, cartilage and skin could be removed or added depending on the problem.
Material for transplanting will be taken from the patient's body or in rarer cases, from a synthetic source. After that, skin will be pulled back over the reshaped nose and stitched with absorbable or nonabsorbable sutures.
Finally, a cast will be placed on your nose, which helps to keep its new shape. Little soft casts could also be placed into your nostrils, in order to stabilize the septum. Nose surgery is one of the most complicated surgeries. You should be very exact when you describe to your surgeon what kind of a result you want and agree on the most appropriate and beautiful nose for the specific patient. The best "candidates" for nose surgery are those, whose nose has stopped growing (at least 18 years old) and who have realistic hopes about the results.
Before the surgery
You may have nose and headaches after the surgery and the swelling around your eyes and nose will increase during the first weeks, but should then start to reduce gradually. You should avoid blowing your nose, while it is healing. The incision should be kept dry.
Casts, bandages and sutures will be removed within a couple of weeks. After that you should avoid excessive UV radiation. You can go back to work after a week, but you will probably want to stay home for a longer period of time due to your swollen looks. You should wait at least two or three weeks with strenuous activities. You can see the final result after a year or a longer period of time.
Aesthetic nose surgery improves the way your nose looks and brings it into balance with the rest of your face. Nose surgery can also help if you have chronic congestion or your nose has congested due to aging (cartilage and the nasal tip weaken and the sides of the nose fall in and therefore the airflow is blocked). As a result of the last problem, a person can start breathing through his or her mouth and/or breathing becomes noisy. With the surgery, which will solve this problem, you can also correct the overall appearance of your nose.
Chronic congested nose might be caused by the peculiarities of the concrete person's nose structure, not to say abnormalities, by allergies or swelling inside your nose caused by viruses.
Another common problem with a nose can be rhinitis. This could be acute, chronic or allergic. The symptoms of an acute or chronic rhinitis are a congested nose, sneezing and nasal discharge. Acute rhinitis often comes with a fever, cough and a sore throat. This is usually caused by a virus and spreads as a droplet infection. Chronic rhinitis is therefore caused by an acute rhinitis, chronic sinusitis, but also allergies, adenoids, a severely crooked septum and the like.
Allergic rhinitis may be seasonal or in other words hay fever, or perennial. Hay fever is caused by pollens. Symptoms include sneezing, watery eyes, itchy nose and nasal discharge. Perennial allergic rhinitis is caused by dust mites, animal hair and dandruff, food and medications. One of the first measures against allergic rhinitis is eliminating the allergens, then allergy medications and in extreme cases also surgery (inter alia removing possible polyps).
Problems with smelling sensitivity are also connected with the nose. This is usually caused by the swelling of the mucous membrane during rhinitis; as a result of this the airflow to the smell receptors is blocked. Also polyps, sinusitis, mucous membrane injuries, aging and smoking reduce smelling sensitivity.
