Liposuction is one of the most popular surgical cosmetic procedures, which both men and women have, irrespective of the age. Women usually have liposuction performed on their abdomen and thighs, men on their abdomen and on the sides.
Liposuction can remove fat from:
You can get the best results removing adipose tissue from the abdomen, hips, outer thigh and buttocks. Liposuction is not meant for losing weight, but to remove stubborn areas of fat that do not respond to dieting or exercising. You can have liposuction on many areas on your body during one surgery, e.g. the abdomen and thighs, but it is not meant to remove excess fat from all over the body with one surgery.
Our clinic is the only one in Estonia where a special liposuction device is used, which makes the procedure less traumatic, the recovery period shorter and the final result smoother. The procedure is performed under general or spinal anesthesia, depending on the area.
The procedure is the following:
Liposuction removes the fat cells from the incision area, but it might not remove all the cells, therefore the result depends on your healthy lifestyle. The two most important parts of that should be a healthy diet and moderate exercising.
In case the patient continues with an unhealthy lifestyle, the remaining fat cells will start to swell and the results will wear off. The best patients for liposuction are in the right weight, whose skin is still supple enough and who have fat accumulated to one or many concrete areas on the body and it doesn't respond neither to dieting nor exercising.
The surgeon will evaluate the patient's physical and mental health, determines the location of the fat and evaluates the suppleness of the skin during the preoperative consultation.
A patient isn't probably a good candidate for liposuction, if
The surgeon will give detailed guidelines on what to eat before the surgery and which medications or vitamins you should or should not take. The patient might be sent to a sports club, where a special pre- and postoperative diet and exercising program is set up. You should also stop smoking for some time, since it hinders wound healing. You should supply yourself with painkillers and arrange for someone to take you home after the surgery.
You will stay in the clinic for a couple of days after the surgery. You can take painkillers if you need. The incision area is usually swollen for about six days to one and a half month and you can see the final result only when the swelling has gone down. You should wear the pressure bandage for a couple of weeks to a month and you have to wear special underwear for six weeks. The sutures will be removed after a week, but we use absorbable sutures usually.
You can go back to work after a week, but should wait at least a month with strenuous activities. The sooner you start with daily walks and the like, the quicker you recover; for example walking prevents blood clots forming in your legs. It is possible to maintain your new body shape with a healthy diet and exercising. You must definitely have the LPG vacuum massage course as well.
There are also many alternatives to liposuction:
A healthy diet and exercising take more time and require greater determination than a quick and effective liposuction, but they affect the whole body and are good for your health.
Alternatives also include other plastic surgery procedures, e.g. tummy tuck that is suitable if the skin has also lost its suppleness. In some cases you should prefer a facelift to remove excess fat from your jaw, since it also makes the skin firmer and lifts the lower part of the face. The solution to men's enlarged breasts (gynecomastia) may be in breast reduction surgery, in addition to liposuction.
But what to do in order not to even think about having plastic surgery (due to being overweight or obese)? At first you need to know the reasons for obesity and then based on this knowledge start with a lifestyle that prevents it. Obesity is the excessive accumulation of fat in the body, which is not merely an imperfection, but can also cause many health problems.
You start to become obese if the energy you get from food exceeds the amount of energy you work off with activities and metabolism. The main reasons are bad diet, overeating and too little activity. People eat fatty foods in enormous amounts and at the same time physical activities are minimal or people don't exercise at all.
Heredity is also one of the reasons for being obese. It determines, for example, that one person has a slower metabolism than the other. In addition, metabolism starts to slow down anyway as we grow older; therefore it is high time for people in their forties to start exercising on a regular basis, since it makes metabolism faster, and also start eating food that quickens metabolism. Changes in lifestyle, stress and diseases also speed obesity.
