Sagging upper eyelids and baggy lower eyelids make a person look tired and older than he or she actually is. At the same time, drooping eyelids may also obstruct vision. Reading, or whatever other activity might be difficult, since the view is partly restricted by the eyelid that droops on the eye. Skin aging is very individual, though the first signs appear already in the twenties. It also depends on the person when and to what extent the soft tissue of the eyelids sags, on the peculiarities of his or her skin and to some extent on heredity and lifestyle. The upper and/or lower eyelids are reshaped during eyelid surgery, as tissue with excessive skin is removed. As a result you will have corrected upper eyelids that do not droop on the eyes (as a fold) and the lower eye lids are not so baggy any more. This surgery does not affect the eyebrows, remove dark circles under the eyes, the so called crow's feet nor other wrinkles around the eyes.
Eyelids are corrected under local or general anesthesia. The incision area will be prepared for the surgery: it is cleaned with antiseptics and the surgeon will make markings for the incisions. Both eyelids are corrected during one surgery. Some patients require only upper or lower eyelid surgery. The incisions will be according to the natural lines of the eyelids: in the upper eyelid folds and just under the lower lashes - that way the scars will be as hidden as possible. The incision may reach the so called crow's feet or the laugh line at the outer corner of the eyes. Next, the skin is removed from the fat and eye muscles by the incisions in the upper eyelid, then the surgeon will remove the sagging skin and excessive fat. After that the incisions will be stitched with extremely thin sutures. The same procedure is done with the lower eyelids - excessive fat is removed and the skin and muscle corrected. In case excessive fat tissue is the cause of the swollen or baggy look of the lower eyelid, the incisions will be in the inner corner of the eyelid. Next, the excessive fat is removed and the incision will be stitched with absorbable sutures. No skin will be removed during the surgery, therefore this technique is primarily used with younger patients, whose skin is supple. This kind of an operation will not leave any visible scars on the lower eyelid. The surgeon might put a sterile bandage on the eyes after the stitching is done, though it is not necessary to cover the eyes. People, who have had eyelid surgery very often also have an eyebrow lift and/or a facelift, which gives them a more youthful look. Patients, who are at least 35 years old and who do not have problems with glaucoma, dry eyes (eye does not produce enough tears), hypothyroidism and do not suffer from diabetes nor hypertension, are the best candidates for eyelid surgery.
You have to provide the surgeon with your medical history, inform him about your illnesses, allergies, any medications or vitamins you are taking. Your vision and the secretion of the lachrymal gland are examined during the first consultation and your wishes and aims are discussed: which kind of eyelid surgery you want; whether only adipose tissue is removed, or skin as well; whether you also want to have an eyebrow lift and/or facelift. The surgeon or consultant will give you detailed guidelines on how to prepare for the surgery and what to do after the surgery. You should certainly stop smoking for some time, since hinders the wound healing and the scars may be more noticeable. The surgeon might also prohibit taking some medications and vitamins for some time (e.g. aspirin), or vice versa, he will recommend to take vitamin C for example. You may need to take painkillers after the surgery; therefore it would be wise to supply yourself with them. You should also have eye drops at home, since your eyes will tend to be dry at first; ice bags might also help to reduce the swelling. It is completely individual how long it would take for the swelling to go down, though usually it goes down in two weeks' or a months' time. You may be light sensitive after the surgery and there are temporary changes in vision, it can be blurry or double. It might also be difficult to close your eyes completely for some time. Sutures will be removed in about a week after the surgery. You can go back to work a week after eyelid surgery and start wearing make-up, which helps to hide the swelling, after the sutures have been removed and the swelling has gone down to a certain degree. It is recommended to wear sunglasses, especially since your eyes may be extremely light sensitive at first. You will see the final result in about six to nine months.
The skin around the eyes is considerably more delicate than the rest of the facial skin and this is where the first signs of aging appear. The muscles of the eyelid weaken when growing old, the skin becomes drooping and fat tissue gathers under the eyes, forming bags. In many cases, the person isn't old at all, but his or her baggy eyes and drooping upper eyelid make him or her look much more tired and older. Skin usually starts to grow noticeably older after reaching the thirties, therefore it is recommended to start using special anti-wrinkle creams then. In normal circumstances the changes of your skin are not so fast and you have time to get used to growing old. But what makes skin grow older faster? One of the main quickening factors is dry skin. It might just be that you have a dry skin type, or skin might become drier due to smoking for example. You should pay extra attention to the skin around the eyes; there are special lotions that moisturize and/or are anti-aging and smooth wrinkles. You should give up smoking, since it makes the skin drier and therefore smokers' skin is usually much more wrinkled than non-smokers'. Consuming excess alcohol quickens the formation of bags under the eyes, drinking a lot of fluids at night has the same effect. Skin's aging is also quickened by a bad diet (too much coffee, vitamin deficiency, etc.) and considerable weight fluctuation. A person, who is well-rested and who has an orderly lifestyle, has a skin that stays younger and fresher longer. By the way, sleeping on your stomach quickens forming bags under your eyes. Squinting your eyes all the time also quickens getting wrinkles around your eyes and therefore it is important, for example, to wear sunglasses with UV protection in a sunny weather. Correcting your eyelids surgically might be the most effective and quickest help.
